Architecture is a very demanding job whether you are an architect or a student. we have all been to the point where we put off our tasks only to let them compile and at the last minute of the deadline we panic and do all the work in one go.

I had always thought that procrastination was laziness. NO, they are different. Laziness is simply not doing anything while you can while procrastination is replacing the task at hand with another more enjoyable or less important task.

I procrastinate when it comes to huge tasks or submissions such as the main studio course in Architecture. and by doing this I tackle the other courses only to be remained with a lot of workload for the studio to push to the last week of the submission where I pull al nighters (strongly discourage).

There are several ways to avoid this and that has helped me reduce the number of times I procrastinate.

  • Create a Task List - Creating a list of the tasks that I have to do has helped me in clarifying and clearing my thoughts. This way I have a clear goal that I can achieve. I usually divide these tasks into categories where I rank them from most important to least important. I tackle them in order of importance as I keep track of them. I use Notion but there are many alternatives out there

  • Pomodoro Technique - This technique uses timing to break down your work sessions. it suggests that for every 25 minutes that you work you take a 5-minute break. We have all been to that break that we never returned from. This technique has helped me to be more productive and get things done.

  • Reward Yourself - After completing a task or an assignment, treat yourself. This can be whatever you enjoy. Be it ice cream or that movie you have been wanting to watch. Whatever it is do something you enjoy. This helps in keeping you motivated and fresh for the next task.

  • Reduce Distractions - Distractions are the beginning of procrastination. Try to minimize the distraction around you including your phone. If it helps put it in the next room or turn it off for the period that you are working.

  • Clean Your Room/Working Space - Most of the time an untidy space can make you unmotivated which leads to procrastination. A clean space motivates you and gives you some energy to tackle your tasks.

It is normal for everyone to procrastinate but what we do to minimize this creates a difference in productivity. Hopefully, these tips will let you overcome them. Comment below if you have tips that have helped you in getting rid of procrastination.
